Bottesini is the Avatar of Uncertainty. Like Santa Claus or the Fisher King, every origin has an earlier, more ethereal antecedent. This is a burden Bottesini researchers learn to live with.

One is reminded of a remark made by an early Bottesini biographer: "He was a slippery bastard; and the more I slid over the surface of his life, the less I understood or even grasped the concept of Truth."
